Oral surgery
Removed when it needs to be — not before.
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Where there is not enough room for them they can become impacted — trapped against the tooth in front or beneath the gum — and cause pain, infection or damage.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
What it involves.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Where one has erupted fully, functions normally and can be kept clean, the sensible course is to leave it alone and monitor it. We will tell you when that is the case.
Where removal is indicated, we assess the position of the tooth and its roots with imaging beforehand, so that the procedure and its recovery can be explained to you accurately in advance.
When removal is usually advised
- Recurrent infection or swelling around the gum flap
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it
- Pain or pressure from an impacted tooth
- Damage to the neighbouring molar
- A cyst forming around an unerupted tooth
What to expect
- Imaging and assessment before any decision is made
- Treatment under local anaesthesia; sedation available
- Clear written aftercare instructions
- Swelling and discomfort for a few days is normal and expected
